The Setting - A typical "Office Complex" map. Long hallways, large rooms separated by cubicles and dividers. A no-respawn Counterstrike style match. There is one person left on the enemy team, you have no idea on the state or location of the enemy.

Would you rather have:

A.) A shotgun with 3 rounds left.

or

B.) An Assault Rifle with 11 rounds left.

Make a choice and state your reasoning

derp, forgot to mention. You're the only person left on your team too. It's down to 1v1

Do we get side arms? I didn't play counter strike so I'm not sure on that one. 11 rounds left in an AR is not a lot and wuld require some shots placed in the facial region. If no side arms, then I would take the shotty and try to get some up close and personal time.

If side arms are in the mix then I would take the AR its good at close range AND at mid to long range. You never know if you might spot the last guy and he is out of range of the shotty.

IRL: Shotgun, depending on Ammo, but assuming 12ga 00 buckshot/rifled hollow point slug alternating (since this is how my shotguns are loaded.)

Socom: AR

BF2, BF3: Shotgun

HalfLife series: Shotgun

MGS Series: Shotgun

Warhawk: Knife. (no shotgun and 11 AR rounds is a joke)

COD: Eject the disc and break it.

IRL
The reason IRL Shotgun is the range and efficacy. at ranges up to 100 yards I pick Shotgun over anything else period. They have a much better range than most games give them credit for. It also depends on the AR. 11 rounds with an AR or AK fitted with a bump fire stock isn't much inside of 25 yards. However, if I had an M1A, CETME, HK91, PTR91, or other 308 caliber rifle, It'd be a toss up because of the penetration and raw stopping power. I'd rather have a handgun (45 or preferably 40 caliber) inside those ranges with a good stopping power cartridge.

Shotgun in so many games?
Because in most games the raw stopping power in a short environment is going to be worth it. 3 rounds is 2 too many.

AR for Socom???
Because Socom is a bit out of hand on nerfing the shotguns (except the 12ga) by creating a really sickly wide pattern thats unrealistic. The fact is, a good 12ga could be operated at about the same speed as the M4-90 in Socom with a pump. Plus people can't shuffle as well as you can in Socom, so the AR is going to maintain a great killing presence with 11 rounds at short range, esp if its an m14, VAL, or AK47.

I would take the shotgun and take my time clearing room for room.

Ar I would lay down and wait for the other person to walk in the long hallway i am watching. If claymores was an op i would hide in a cubicle with a claymore at the door and wait till boom time.
