I just decided to start a new thread instead of crowding the shoutbox. This is about the ar-15 rifle, which is just the civilian version of the M16/M4 family of rifles. I am looking into getting one in the next two weeks and was wondering if anyone here has any advice on brands, bolt carrier groups, twist rates, etc.

As for Tony's comment, they are not illegal. The only difference between the ar and the M16 is the ar is only capable of semi-auto fire. The M16, which is capable of full auto fire is also not illegal. People think machine guns are illegal, but they aren't. The rub is that you need a class III license, have to pay a tax stamp, and have to be able to afford one. Due to government regulations, full auto guns can run you upwards of $50,000. So, they aren't illegal, but they are prohibitively expensive.

I know quite a bit about rifles, handguns, etc. but would still like any advice I can get. Thanks in advance.

I don't know much about rifles, but back during my boot camp days, I know the A1 was fully automatic. I believe A2 and on were three round burst.

A1 and A3's are auto/semi/safe, A2 and A4 have burst/semi/safe I think.

AR15 would be my first pick in the .223/5.56 platform, but it is my least favorite round. I hate the round. Good thing about the AR platform is the customization, and you can spend thousands outfitting an AR... and you can do some really cool stuff with it, but at the end of the day, it will always be 5.56 platform.

While I never take them seriously on range, there is one particular outftting I like that a friend has... it is built around blackouts. It's very short and very slim, light and compact. The blackout mods are really cool and turns it into something quite different, complete with suppressor mounts and the whole bit. While the AR15 is what I would consider low power as an assault rifle, as an SMG it's very powerful, and that's essentially what he has done. I hate .223, and I really am considering building one of these, it's smaller than a standard carbine and isn't much bigger than a MP5 without a stock.

I say that to say this: I would recommend taking your time and building to spec. Stay away from tacti"cool" bullshit. My friends that get that shit end up trying to unjam their shit all day. A lot of manufacturers are ripping people off with "Cool" looking garbage that sucks. Stay away from stuff that seems really cheap and looks really "cool". It's junk.

Play with other peoples stuff. DPMS, Doublestar and Rock River Arms are all good receivers. A lot of people like colt, but I'm not too hot on them. I've been hearing a lot of good lately about Del-Ton.

I do recommend an EOTech sight, no matter which iteration you get. You can get a good one for around $350 or so at a shop, but you can spend as much as you want on their sights, highly specialized for range, acquisition, adjusting distance, etc, so you can pick one out specialized to your build.

I agree, Keyser, I think the 5.56 is way too small of a round. I much prefer .30 cal. I want an ar-15 just for fun and for shtf, but eventually want an ar-10, which is chambered for .308. One of the fun things you can get for an ar is this:

I mean, c'mon, how cool is that! I was looking at a dpms lower chambered for 5.56. I know that the most important things are the barrel, and bolt carrier group, so I am just going to get a base rifle, like a dpms oracle, and then over time just build it up. For example, get a bravo company barrel or rock river arms barrel. What do you guys think?

@Keyser: I just checked the Del-Ton website and the rifle kits seem to be a pretty good deal. I can get a rifle kit, minus stripped receiver for $499. I looked at an SAA stripped lower and I could have a complete rifle for just over $600. What do you think? Do you have any opinions or pointers?

I think either company is gonna give you a good rifle. In addition, you owe it to yourself to check out Doublestar.

I'd say it's better to buy from one of these manafacturers for your first one. They are kind of like guitars, you don't want to go fucking around learning about pickups and amps and shit. You wanna get a good strat or les paul or telecaster and go to town. You can build after you start feeling and learning the details.

So my advice is to get your hands on as many as possible and feel them in your hands, which may be very difficult, and if it proves too difficult, research the three sites listed and go for it, you really aren't going to get a bad weapon out of these three manufacturers.

So, I had decided to get a del-ton and was about to go get it when another deal was brought to my attention. Basically, One of my buddies needed a couple hundred dollars worth of textbooks that I had. Instead of him buying them elsewhere, I just gave him the books along with a few bucks and he gave me his AK-47. With the money I had leftover I bought a 1911. I decided that when I get an AR I want to spend enough money where I could get my gun to where I want it, and I don't think I was able to do that just yet. So, I've included some pics of my guns. One is of my Mosin, which I refinished. The other is of my AK-47 with an East German ammo pouch and the final is of my 1911 chambered in 45 ACP.

Holy Shit. Much better deal.

I love Mosin's. I have several, and they are all dead on tack drivers with open sights out to about 250 yards. I much prefer AK over AR due to the piston vs direct impingement system and decreased complexity, not to mention the penetration of the round.

I just bought one from M+M arms and am waiting for it to arrive.

1911's are killer. period.
