North Hollywood Bank Robbery. AK47's and Heavy Armor

This happened back in 1997, before the internet really took off, so I'm not sure who all has seen it on discovery channel or History channel, but this is a bank robbery where 2 guys using AK-47's and heavy armor faced a police force.

yeah I remember that...it was very similiar to the scene from the Michael Mann film Heat with Deniro and Pacino (came out in 1995)

all that shooting and if I remember correctly (can't access the videos right now) the one suspect died from killing himself...crazy..those dudes were like the heavies from Unhcarted 2

Yep, they aren't sure if he was TRYING to kill himself or if he was attempting a one handed reload and accidentally pulled the trigger when he took a round in the spine.

I think they got the idea from Heat, but they were MUCH more heavily armored than the guys in Heat. Which is a HELL of a movie for anyone who hasn't seen it.

yeah...I agree Heat is great...Michael Mann is a solid director and of course the cast is good...it wasn't as widely received because everyone was expecting the planets to align when you put deniro and pacino togehter so many were "underimpressed" but good movie..my favorite of his films is still Last of the Mohicans but he makes good films, heck he helped launch Russel Crowe with the Insider..great film. All of his films have been good, parts of some don't live up to people's expectations but he makes solid films (e.g. Collateral and Miami Vice I thought were good..had some flaws for sure). I have not seen Public Enemies but that seems like another film were it is probably very good but it gets doomed by expectations that people have and they evaluate the film on what they expected and not what it is.

But sorry if that was off topic but what a crazy event that robbery was..I thought the controversy over them letting the dude lay there and die was interesting.

Mann went from a director I was ho hum about to one I've grown to really like and respect in a lot of ways. Heat was great, and I thought that is was weird that you only get Pacino and DeNiro sitting across a table, you never see both faces at once... but yeah. Great movie, and I like the fact that in his movies, gunfire is LOUD and realistic. The scene where Tom Cruise takes the guys out in the alley in Collateral is still capable of making me say "holy shit" everytime I see it.

Yeah Heat is an awesome movie, and I have seen this before on the history channel before comcast took that channel away *shakes fist in anger*. But yeah when I watched it again I thought he was about to say the two dudes took some PCP before they robbed the bank. Now that would have been a site to behold.

I was in LA when that was going down, so I watched a lot of it live. LA cuts to live footage on almost anything. This was incredible to watch unfold. I can't access the video, so i am working off memory, but I recall that swat took a while to respond. So the cops on the scene were heavily outgunned. In addition, there were off-duty guys who ran to the scene to help out--with no armor and only their sidearm. Surreal.

                @CMJ75

They tried to say they would not move him because was consider to be a risk. When it was pointed out he was lying there for over an hour without any weapons near him, they claimed he could have been boobie trapped with explosives. But there was NO way they were letting that guy live. They just sat there and watched him bleed out.

The LAPD was simply out gunned. As a direct result every Squad car is issued high power weapons, to go along with the side arms. Every Sgt is issued even more powerful weapons.

...So live, that when thy summons comes to join
                The innumerable caravan, which moves
To that mysterious realm, where each shall take
His chamber in the silent halls of death,
Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night,
Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed
By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.
