    Ok... Need help.

Probably should have checked this with you guys first, but instead I went and bought myself a 1tb external usb hdd for my PS3.

It's fine with the music, video and picture files. But I can't put on the game content, or seem to find a way to download games on to it! Is there something I'm doing wrong, or should I have bought an internal hdd instead?

Yea. I asked in the shop and PS3 is recognising it as an internal hdd.

Like Fitz said, you have to format it in FAT32.

Second, if what you want is download PSN content straight to the external, that's not gonna happen (I think).

You can backup your internal onto the external and then wipe the internal. That way you could have your games saved on the external, BUT you won't be able to access them unless you do a system restore (or whatever its called).

I confused myself. Can someone explain it better?

Yeah, you can BACK UP your PSN games and saves and whatnot using the Backup Utility, but you can't run games from it. Just like you can't install Windows to an external drive and use it as a computer's main drive...

You need both to upgrade the PS3 if that's what you want to do... you back everything up to the external, manually perform a Sync Operation on your trophies, then shut down, install the new internal (any 2.5" SATA Drive) and then reboot. Once it reboots with the new HDD, you go to the Backup Utility and tell it to restore. After that, you resync trophies and away you go.

Using an External is plenty good for photos, videos and music though.

I'm about to buy one... So, this one:

              or this one?

Or would one of the others on the site be better? I'm crap at this stuff. Apart from the RPM and the GB's the rest is gobbeldeegook to me and I'm not sure if it makes much odds anyway. I appreciate the help!

                The first one.

Everywhere I've read states that the OEM PS3 HDD's are 5400RPM... I've had both 5400 and 7200s in my ps3, and there is no performance difference that I've seen. Not sure the PS3 takes advantage of the speed bump.

Found this handy guide over on the playstation forums that's really useful for any first timers out there. It really is that simple!

                      Here's the link...
